English Doubles is an editorial project devoted to the history, character and craftsmanship of British sporting gunmaking. Based in America with our attention firmly turned toward Britain, we seek to preserve and share the stories represented by historic makers, individual guns and generations of skilled hands.
Our work brings together maker histories, technical explanations, proof-mark guidance, collection notes and broader stories from the British sporting tradition. The purpose is not simply to catalogue names and dates, but to provide useful context for readers who want to understand why these guns were made as they were and what their surviving details can reveal.

Historical records can be incomplete, terminology can change, and the details of an individual gun may not always support a certain conclusion. Our process is designed to keep those limits visible.
Start with authoritative material
Where available, we favor maker archives, patent records, proof-house material, period records and other primary or authoritative sources.
Separate fact from interpretation
Confirmed dates and documented features are presented as such. Where evidence is incomplete, we avoid turning an assumption into a certainty.
Link readers to the sources
Reference articles include source links when they help readers verify a claim or continue their own research.
Review and update
Pages may be corrected or expanded when stronger documentation, clearer photographs or better historical evidence becomes available.
